The Hats We Wear
It appears we have all been in for staying at home for a much longer haul then we ever thought we would be, so first, I hope you are all staying safe and well, and not going too bananas with being in this situation, but I am also here to share with you that there are healthy and creative ways to adapt to this situation.
I had a client reach out to me this week and say that she was really struggling with staying on track with fitness + nutrition with everything being thrown into chaos at home with the coronavirus and it’s trickle effect on life as she knew it. This client is a mom of four, is a founder & CEO of a new business working from home (this was in place for her before all of this shelter in place stuff), and she was on a really progressive track to consistent exercise and new sustainable eating habits. She was elated to finally be fitting into clothes that she found in her closet that she had not been able to fit into in years, and was not only feeling the progress, but also seeing the progress. Then, things changed….
Her call for help was this: “moms and dads wear a lot of hats to begin with, and now, we have more hats being added to our heads, ie home schooler, founders of businesses, full time jobs, child care, sports coach, cook, cleaner, barber… so how do we now balance the stress of all of that?and I feel like I have lost all of the work I have been doing.”
First, I pointed out that she was actually still doing rather well with her new eating habits even with the added chaos and some moments of sliding back into the old ones.
MY ANSWER
RE ASSESS & TAKE NEW ACTION
Any time there is a major shift in life, whether that’s due to personal reasons, business reasons, major life changes, and even a pandemic, it is very important for you to reassess where you are currently, to consider what your new normal is, and then take actions that fit into it. I am all about focusing on what is doable. With my client, she was able to reassess, and when she did that, she gained clarity and eventually came to the following conclusions:
In order to cope with all of this and the kids, etc, I MUST get outside for a run, or get in some exercise any way that I can because it affects my mood and energy.
After she decided that this was a non-negotiable, she was able to figure out a time in the day, and the amount of times per week, that she could actually commit to doing this
To continue with the new nutrition habits already implemented and to focus on the consistency with that
ACTION
She had a conversation with her partner and kids on how they could all help to make this work
The next week, she implemented her plan of action, and guess what? She actually was not that far off from staying on the original track that she had worked so hard to get on!
It also required less time than she originally thought, so she felt amazingly efficient
POSITIVES:
She surprised herself as to what she was able to do
She felt less stressed and more efficient in her work and home life
She feels in control of her own health again
She even threw in some extra workouts, because she was feeling that good!
TAKE AWAY
When you find yourself in any given new situation, when it feels like chaos, take the time to reassess where you are right now. You may surprise yourself at how you may not actually be that far off from your original intention. This process can take out the weight of overwhelm while leaving you room to ask yourself what it is that you CAN do!
