Essentials at Home
This is an unprecedented time with unprecedented challenges, but exercise is one of the variables that remains a constant and still in your control. With everything going on in the world right now, I encourage you to be mindful of your own physical needs along with everyone else’s. Through the tough times, and the good, your fitness is an essential aspect to your health and one that can keep you strong, healthy and present for everyone else you love.
Those who know me well and my style of training know that I have a “no excuses” approach, and that includes setting yourself up for success at home. Don't use the gravity of everything that is happening as an excuse to not stay healthy. In fact, we can do so many things within the confines of our own home that can help ourselves, and in turn, others. By having a few essential pieces of equipment at home that are readily accessible, you will be able to workout anytime you can squeeze it in, virtually, or on your own.
The Short List
The truth is, you don’t really need anything to exercise, you just need to be willing to stand up and move a little. But if you’d like to keep up with your strength & endurance, as well as keep it interesting and progressive, here are some things that you can add to your home gym list. These items are easy to store in your home, they add versatility, are super effective, and maximize efficiency.
Yoga mat: ok this one is obvious. But, you can also use a bath towel/ beach towel for most things on the floor/carpet. If on the floor, a towel could add a bit of a slippery stuation, but the great thing about that is that it can be turned into another exercise! oh, I love silver lining,
Benefits
Portable, and can be used in multiple environments
It helps you execute exercises properly and can help your alignment due to the directional components associated: i.e. 4 corners/ parallel edges
It helps define your actual workout space!
Blue or Gray Theraband (3-4ft in length) : this is a specific type of resistance band made by a company called Theraband. This is seriously one of my favorite pieces of equipment because of the specific levels of resistances they carry, as well as it’s portability.
Benefits
Portable, compact, and you can literally take it EVERYWHERE!
Is used for exercises appropriate for all levels of fitness: beginner- advanced, time vs very little time.
Also great for injury recovery- to fully healed!
Perfect for toning in all of the areas you want!
Comes in a latex free option (which actually increases the resistance a little)
Weights: For the most basic, I suggest a set of 3lbs, 5lbs, 8lbs, and 10lbs, (15lbs if you’d like)
Benefits:
Your body will be balanced and challenged
Strength training is essential to any fitness routine
Adds variety to workouts
Physio Ball: This one takes up a bit more space, but...
Benefits:
It can serve as another chair while working at a desk while also improving posture and core stability.
Again, adds variety
Great for all phases of pre and post natal (also known as a birthing ball)/ beginner- advanced fitness levels
Increases stability/ balance/ and strength
Your body will be balanced and challenged
