The Perfect Scenario for Achieving the Best Body
THE PERFECT SCENARIO.
Last week, I held a small private virtual chat where I had the chance to hear from other women and the struggles and challenges that we are facing with motherhood and achieving optimum health & wellness. We spoke about our bodies, the amazing gift that they are, but also the difficulties that they have been through and/or may still be going through.
One of the common threads on why exercise falls by the way side, is that mothers tend to put themselves last, and at the end of the never ending laundry to do list. But why is that when we need to be as healthy as possible in order to deliver our best to our families? And why is that, when we know that by taking care of ourselves first, we have more to give?
What I commonly hear is that many people are stuck because they are waiting for that perfect scenario to get started: (which is really just another form of procrastination….which believe me, I know all too well)
Maybe some of these reasons sound familiar:
Not having time or the same amount of time every day to exercise
The weather is no longer good outside, so I can no longer fit in workouts
I don’t have access to a gym or studio classes
Not in the budget to exercise or buy healthy food
I can’t exercise this week because _____( fill in the blank)
I will exercise when ________(fill in the blank)
THE ANSWER.
So what is the perfect scenario for workouts?
The answer is: there isn’t one.
There is no one perfect way to fit in fitness and health into your life, and if you are waiting for the perfect scenario to reveal itself and for everything to be lined up just so you can workout, chances are that you won’t fit it in. You just have to start by doing, and find ways that work for you no matter how small they may seem. Someone recently gave me some great advice: “You have to accept that the way you are working right now is not ideal, but doing something, is something, and it’s better than nothing. And you just have to become ok with that.”
I find this to be extremely relevant not only to my life at the moment, but to many others out there as well. Things will always fluctuate and change, so if you instill the habit of always finding a way even though it’s not ideal, and you stop waiting for the perfect scenario that you may have once had to occur, then during the times when it seems impossible to “fit it in” you will automatically be able to adjust and keep fitting it in no matter what situation you find yourself in. And though it won’t be ideal, or the perfect scenario, you will be ok with that.
SOLUTIONS
One of my core beliefs is that there is ALWAYS something you CAN do! This may be very different for different people, but it’s true. I know it can be difficult to fit these things in, but here’s some food for thought. What if instead of saying “I can’t do it because….”, start asking yourself: “what CAN I do right now? Or today that I will make me feel like I accomplished something?” – Think of it as finding creative solutions to a very common problem. Chances are you will be able to fit in more than you originally thought.
When I feel that I have no time, what has become the most helpful to me is to really sit down and decide what is the MOST important thing I can do in the present moment that will:
make me feel accomplished
Useful & productive
Healthy
Satisfied
The point is, you can always find a reason NOT to do something, so why not flip that around, and always find a reason TO DO something.
TIPS ON HOW TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST
TIME: you may not have 2 hours to exercise, but do you have 10-15min? maybe you can cut back on some of that screen time? Or try fitting in a workout first before you start your to do list rather than at the end.
WEATHER: the weather sucks during winter in most places, but can you workout inside your living room? Or a small space? There are tons of resources, apps, online streaming workouts that are available to help you with this!
ACCESS: No gym or studio access? Again, why not do it home? and again, there are a ton of affordable options in the app space.
MOTIVATION: Not feeling optimal or that motivated? Try something on the milder side like yoga, stretching, or simple body weight workouts for arms & legs, or a few body weight exercises that will get your body moving even if it’s just for a short while.
