The Power of the "Ah-ha" Moment
I wanted to share something that happens to me as well as my clients, and it's something that occurs at the most surprising times.
The “ah-ha” moment.
An “ah-ha” moment happened to me recently when I went to grab a coffee at a place that didn’t have the usual additions I like to add. I really needed the coffee and ended up succumbing to what was available: a regular sugar and Coffee mate hazelnut creamer.
I used to drink coffee like that all of the time in my performing days. I lived on sugar and carb loading to fuel myself through long rehearsal days because why not? I was going to burn it off anyway right? Back to the present moment, I haven't taken my coffee like this in years, and something funny happened. I took a sip, and almost spit it out. It was so sweet I couldn’t stand it.
I proceeded to throw out that coffee (while feeling bad about being wasteful) and got another one this time leaving the sugar out but still added a dash of the flavored creamer. Thinking it would be much better this time, I could now sit and enjoy my coffee treat.
This time I took about 3 sips before I realized I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t bring myself to take another sip. I realized that not only had my taste completely changed but that it was so easy not to want it and to say goodbye.
That’s when you know you have a true “ah-ha” moment.
These are moments that hit you when you are out and about in your daily life. Something that used to feel really difficult when it comes to eating or exercise all of a sudden feels much easier. It’s a moment where you realize that you have finally made that complete one-eighty you never thought would happen in a million years.
Now you can turn something and it's an easy decision to make.
It's a moment where a bad habit officially changes to a good one. These are the moments that inspire you to keep moving forward.
The power of an “ah-ha” moment like this is realizing what was once normal for you, yet unhealthy and difficult to cut cold turkey has now become something you don’t even want.
These are the moments that make you feel pretty awesome because you realize the work and commitment you have put towards your fitness and health are paying off in ways you perhaps didn’t know were possible.
Next time you have an “aha” moment, take a moment to recognize that you made a positive shift and pat yourself on the back. Look forward to the next one. You might find they start happening more often than you think.
One of the my favorite things is when clients share their "ah-ha" moments. Not only is it amazing to hear what the moment is, but the best is when I actually see them light up from the realization that a transformation has occurred.
