The Moment the Body Does This
When I work with clients there is a feeling that they commonly express. It's usually regarding their perspective on whether or not changes are happening in proportion to the effort they are putting in. It feels to them that they are working so hard and not really seeing progress…at least through their eyes…
I know all too well how discouraging it can be to work hard on improving your wellness, exercise and eating habits and yet still feel so unsure anything is actually changing.
This is usually the moment when I remind them of the progress they have already made as well as the results that have already been measured. I encourage them to stay with it. By “it” I mean the new exercise routine they are doing consistently and the healthy eating decisions they are making (even with slip ups along the way, because we all have those).
I always expect this moment to come up at some point and when it does, I am usually excited because I know they are on the verge of the next thing that’s about to happen. It’s the moment when
The body clicks!
This is a moment they have been waiting for and it feels magical.
Usually, a week after the frustrating moment from above, clients come back a session or two later to report that someone, either a friend, partner or colleague says something like: “wow, your arms look great! What are you doing? Whatever it is, it’s working.” This is the moment where they feel acknowledged for the effort they’ve put it and can finally accept the transformation that has occurred.
I call this moment "when the body clicks” because that’s exactly what happens. Our bodies are so divinely intelligent that when healthier ways of eating and exercise are done consistently over a long period of time (i.e. 6 months,or longer), it’s like the body finally believes you are going to continue to treat it the right way and it rewards you. And when this moment occurs, it certainly is magical.
Here's my PSA for the day: Whether you have just started out on your own health journey or you are at the frustrating turning point and haven't had this moment yet, I encourage you to stick it out. Rest assured this moment will happen.
When the moment finally arrives where you start getting positive feedback from others, know that your body has "clicked". Accept the complements, acknowledge your success and give yourself a high five!
Introducing new habits and sticking with them is no easy task but know your moment might just be on the horizon and your consistency will pay off. Knowing this moment is out there in itself can serve as the extra motivation you need to push through frustrating moments and will keep you on the right path towards achieving all of your goals.
