White Pants & Motivation
Most clients express that within the larger scope of their goals of feeling better they also want to look better. They want to look great in the clothes they already own--- that have been in the closet for far too long.
This reminds me of a past client I worked with back when I lived in NYC and a moment that I have never forgotten.
Right before one of our workout sessions she revealed to me that she had one goal: to fit into her white pants again.
Now I knew her very well, so I felt comfortable enough to do this--- every time she was in my class, at some point in order to motivate her to do a few extra reps on her leg lifts, I would go up to her and instead of saying something like: "ten more", I would simply whisper in her ear: “white pants.” She would give a little chuckle followed by a fierce look of determination, and then would just keep going. I mean, it was serious motivation for her.
This became a really sweet and fun running joke between us, but also for her it was a huge motivator. This little game went on for a few months. Her workouts and food were always on point. (Allowing for some fun indulgences which you all know I endorse whole heartedly). Then one day during class as I was leading the leg exercises, she came up to me and said:
...White Pants
I stopped immediately and gave her a huge hug because I knew exactly what that meant, and I kid you not, we started jumping up and down together. The whole class had no idea what was happening, so before getting back into the workout I revealed to the class our inside story. They erupted into applause, and by the end of class “white pants” had become a mantra for everyone!
I share this because sometimes the best way to stay on track is to pick that one thing you know will make you ultra focused on achieving your goals. It doesn’t have to be a pair of pants or a piece of clothing at all. For example, it can be the next fun event you want to look great for.
Whatever it is, as we head into the New Year think of what your thing is, your own “white pants”. Have this be your incentive that will keep you going towards reaching your goal.
To make it even more motivating, share it with a mentor, instructor, coach or friend who can remind you of this in a loving, encouraging, maybe even funny way during times you need that extra motivation to push yourself to the next level.
What will that thing be for you? What will your trigger word be?
